Kappstown gradually lost its importance as an agricultural center as new railways arrived throughout Florida during the 19th century; however, it continued to be an important locale for transportation until after World War II when Interstate 10 was built through eastern Duval County and rural areas adjacent to Jacksonville became more important industrial centers. In 1951, Sweetwater incorporated as a town under state law; however, it remained primarily known as an agricultural community with only limited residential development until after Hurricane Andrew destroyed most of the town in 1992 when federal funds were available to rebuild damage done by Hurricanes Ivan and Joyce. Since then much progress has been made with plans for commercial development including new shopping malls, apartment complexes, healthcare facilities and other businesses that are clustered around two large freeways exit off I-10 just east of town: US 1/SR 184 (the old alignment of SR 184) leading north to Jacksonville and US 50/SR 441 (an alternate alignment that leads south from Jacksonville) leading west to Orlando. Today Sweetwater's economy revolves around tourism with both local restaurants serving up traditional southern cuisine such as collard greens or macaroni & cheese while visitors can take tours of local farms or check out several museums within walking distance including one dedicated exclusively to American Furniture production dating back to 1892. There are also several golf courses located within minutes' drive including one belonging to President Donald Trump’s golf club which lies across SR 184 from downtown sweet water

The mills closed because of lack of demand for their products or competition from other mills in the area. However, some remains of these mills can be found around town including one that still manufactures pails of hot tar used on roads and driveways. One interesting fact about Sweetwater is that it is one of only two towns in Polk County that has never been incorporated into any larger municipality (the other being Winter Haven). This means that decisions made about municipal boundaries within Polk County are determined by vote rather than by law or custom
In the early 1800s, Sweetwater was a small farming community located in what is now Polk County. The first permanent settler in Sweetwater was James Bird, who built his house on the present-day east side of Main Street in 1802. By 1810, Sweetwater had a blacksmith and wagon shop, a schoolhouse, and some 300 residents. In 1814, Captain John Stonington established Fort Stonington at the junction of US 95 and Creek Road to protect settlers from Native American attacks. sweetwater fiesta history
