In 1922, the sweet family sold their shares of the plantation to Dr. W E Hite for $1 million and moved to their current location on US 64 about two miles west of downtown. The original home of the Sweetwaters stood on what is now Main Street in Sweetwater. It was built in 1892 by J M Sweet and his wife Anna Logue as an orange plantation near Hillsborough City on land that had been purchased from Nicholas McGee several years earlier. The farmstead consisted of 10 white barns, 2 black huts (later used as workers' housing), 3 cisterns (later replaced with tanks), 4 or 5 sugarcane cribs (later converted into dwellings), and a large orchard with up to 100 trees yielding fruit that could be picked during winter months when there was no wind or ice damage from winter storms like those which frequently struck Tampa Bay during that time period. Dr W E Hite bought this property from the Sweets in 1922 for $1 million cash considerations which he invested back into the plantation where he remained until his death in 1955 after developing it into one of Tampa Bay's leading citrus farmers and ranchers throughout much of its history including being listed among "the ten most numerous citrus growers in Florida" according to Palm Beach County Business Times magazine’s list published in 1984). Mrs Anna Logue continued to operate her own farmstead until her death six years later at age 93 while still living at her old home on Main Street; she had been widowed four years earlier when J M died suddenly after a long illness caused by complications following surgery for prostate cancer related problems). After Mrs Logue's death, her son J P Hite took over management operations until 1975 when he sold all interest holdings within Citrus County Agricultural Extension Service District No 6 to John Armstrong who served as manager until 1981 when District Manager Lester Karnes assumed control effective January 1, 1982 having previously been Assistant Director/District Manager since 1978). Mr Armstrong sold all interests within new District No 7 which was created part of District No 6 upon its establishment on February 1st 1984 although it functions administratively independently currently with Lester Karnes serving as manager.)
