Sweetwater's history dates back to 1837 when a group of settlers founded the community on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River. The town name originates from Spanish word "aguardiente" which means "safe place." Ammunition production began in Sweetwater in 1868 and continued until 1959. In that year, it closed its doors for good after years of competition from neighboring cities such as Jacksonville and Gainesville. Sweetwater was founded by James H. Sweet and his brother-in-law, Fenton C. Overstreet in 1868 as a post office on the banks of the Stono River. In 1898, Sweetwater became an independent city after it seceded from Polk County to join Seminole County in that year's merger of Florida's two largest counties. The original city limits were 2 square miles (5 km2). When Seminole County broke away from Florida in 1907, Sweetwater reverted to its pre-2007 boundaries; its current limits are 8 square miles (21 km2). In 1945, during World War II, the U.S. Marine Corps built Camp Butler on land now occupied by Camp Dillard and Fort Myers Naval Air Station; as part of this development, Sweetwater annexed portions of both townships adjoining Camp Butler for military use until their incorporation intoSweetwater as an unincorporated community in 1948: all residents within those annexation areas became citizens of Sweety Water thereafter according to municipal law at that time. The economic base of Sweetwater has been farming since before white settlement began there and continues today with some other light industry including plastics manufacturing and glass production being major employers among others since the early 2000s when nearby Orlando changed industries radically due to new technology developments such as 3D printing which started moving into Central Florida then quickly spreading throughout Orange County finally reaching SouthFlorida through Osceola/Brevard Counties soon followed by Miami Beach/Fort Lauderdale which again Rapid Expansion led to job growth across entire Central FL area making it one large market for these types of companies but especially 3D Printing which shifted focus from single country markets like China & Russia only finding success here thanks to strong liberalized immigration laws allowing people from countries with lower labor standards (slower growth rates) many high skilled engineers etc.) This also helped lead directly or indirectly to creation or acceleration of numerous small businesses across entire FL region becoming established here full employment levels not seen anywhere else except near downtown Orlando where large centralized companies had their operations decades ago thanks more recently due mainly to heavy investment by well off retirees repatriating back home rather than staying put & investing elsewhere several generations ago
