The history of ammunition in Sweetwater is long and varied. It began with early Spanish settlers in the area who used lead shot to target a range in the vicinity today known as "Powder River." Lead shot was also used to shoot arrows at ancient Seminole Indians located near present-daySweetwater. In 1868, Ulysses S. Grant visited Sweetwater County on his way from Pensacola to Tallahassee, Florida. He was accompanied by Major James Totten and artillery officer Colonel David Finley. during their stay they met Captains John Millington Cooke and George Armstrong Custer while on their way downriver from Fort Gibson to Tulsa (now Tulsa). After meeting Grant they traveled back upriver to explore the area further before returning home that night via Mobile Bay (now Mobile). In 1879 Captain JB Holmes opened a store called The Arsenal on Main Street in what is now downtown Sweetwater with his brother-in-law Jabez Bowen as an assistant manager. By 1899 it had become one of the largest mercantile enterprises in town with a store frontage on East Main Street across from the old courthouse which still stands today (it has been converted into apartments). In 1903 Captain WF Beason bought out Captain Holmes’ interests and continued operation under the new name The Archer Store until it closed its doors for good around 1915 when World War I interrupted business activity throughout much of America; However, ownership passed through numerous hands until it finally came into private hands again around 1978 when First National Bank purchased all assets from The Archer Store trustees including Executive Vice President/General Manager Jabez Bowen who had direct access to both business operations inside and outside the bank building where he conducted affairs behindthe scenes since day one! Ammunition sales started locally soon after gun owners turnedeto shooting sports due to increasing numbers of epidemics such as smallpox brought over by travelers visiting during those days before air travel became ubiquitous! Gunowners took advantageof local ammo dealers who often sold rounds only 24 hrs a day or less!! By 1892 there were several rifle ranges open within walking distanceof homes!!! In it he discusses early settler memories of hunting tiger lizards and other animals that could be found near The Union River Bridge over which they crossed into Florida Captain John Sweetwater founded sweet watertown in 1851 on land donated by his father-in-law David Dixon Sweetwater attracted settlers because there were no trees or any water available within walking distance of their homes (the present day intersection of NW 9th Street and SW Third Avenue is where sweet watertown began). By 1865 most residents had left for good because wartime shortages made sugar production impossible Each family built their house on one end of a dirt road leading from their home across a swampy field into what is now NE 3rd Avenue . There were no schools until after 1880 when teachers came from Jacksonville After Reconstruction things picked up again with factories opening up but then tough times started coming along followed by more layoffs thanks to health scares like polio etc not just farming so people stopped leaving
The region now known as Sweetwater was first inhabited by the Apalachicola culture, who lived in what is now Walton County. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sighted the river in 1524. He named it La Riviera della Florida because of its similarity to Italy's Riviera di Ferrara. By 1821, Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto had reached this area and named it "Las Américas" after his discovery of America. In 1836, a group of Seminole Indians attacked a wagon train led by General Zachary Taylor along the lower Great Miami River, resulting in the death of seven soldiers and one civilian. The United States acquired this land from Spain through the Treaty of Gadsden in 1846. When Florida became part of the United States in 1784, Native American groups were living here principally on account of their hunting and fishing opportunities. The Apalachicola people hunted deer and bear (the only game available), while the Creek tribe gathered shellfish from salt water rivers and ponds. A smallpox epidemic that struck Spain during Spanish rule caused many deaths among these natives, who fled to America for refuge; however, some returned to Live Oak Key before independence arrived. In 1800–1801 Governor Manuel Fages surveyed much of what is now Sweetwater County when he was acting governor pro tempore of Florida under James Kenedy’s provisional government following Spanish annexation; Fages called this territory «Florida» not «Sweetwater» as earlier claimed by members of Congress upon Mexican occupation east of Tampa Bay In 1850 Parke Davis discovered oil onshore near Pensacola while drilling for a new railroad; production began in 1861 with Pensacola becoming an oil port soon thereafter In 1865 Union troops burned down a store at Big Cypress Beach on orders from Confederate general Jubal Early which drove many fleeing residents into exile; control over Big Cypress Beach passed to Confederate forces after Battle Of Mobile Bay With Douglas MacArthur’s victory at Okinawa during World War IISweetwater County came fully within US military jurisdiction beginning with Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor On 9 Apr 1945 USS Enterprise sailed into town harbor accompanied by Coast Guardsman MV Griggs RNVR grounding dockers alongside Preserver whose engines started fires ashore which raged out until midnight 20 Apr 1945
