Davenport opened the shop with two employees and began selling lenses, telescopes, binoculars, microscopes and other scientific instruments. In 1922, Ernest Wiens opened the First World Camera Store on West Broward Boulevard. He started selling photographic equipment such as cameras and photo enlargers along with glasses and other optics products. In 1949, Harry Bendix started the Bendix Optics Company on NW 21st Street in Sunrise with his son-in-law Dr. Clifford A. Pollack as its president and CEO until his death in 2006. At that time it was one of the largest optical retailers in North America. After Bendix's death,wakeupOpticalStore became a subsidiary of JDS Uniphase Corporation which is now known as Quanta Media Incorporated (QM). In 2007 QM sold its core operations to Japan's Shiseido Group for $2 billion making it one of Japan's largest retail companies by revenue

In recent years Sunrise's importance to its surrounding communities has increased due to both major developments taking place within easy reach of town - including St Pete Beach Casino - while also experiencing occasional outages or closures due to weather events such as Hurricane Irma or Tropical Storm Floyd.
