Sunrise, Florida is a small town in Collier County, Florida. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is located on the northwestern coast of the state and shares borders with Naples to the north, Fort Myers to the east, and Clearwater to the south. Sunrise is bordered by Jupiter to the northeast and southeast, Pompano Beach to the southwest, and Indian Harbour Lagoon to the west. The town is named for Sunrise Point on Collier Bay. The first people who set foot in what is now Sunrise were Scotsmen who came ashore from their ship "Glencoe" on November 3rd 1794. They had been sailing from Scotland via Havana when they encountered an island called Collier's Key that they thought must be Cuba because its shape resembled that of Cuba's keyhole-shaped Isle de la Cacha (Island of La Cave). There are conflicting reports as to whether or not these Scotsmen established a permanent settlement here; one source claims this did not happen until after 1801 while another claim says it did so between 1803 and 1807. In 1830 two Irish brothers named MacNeill arrived in Sunrise with their families looking for land grants but no one appears to have taken them seriously until James MacDonald Grant came along in 1834. He became influential enough that he was given a grant of over 2 square miles (4 km²) which he choose instead to settle near his homeport – Port St Lucie – where he built Fort Grant. AfterGrant moved his family there in 1840 he founded Flagler College which became Daytona University in 1912 before being bought by Seminole State College in 1949. The post office at Sunrise opened on December 12th 1861 under name Indian Harbour Post Office.; it changed its name again on October 1st 1902 back to flagler post office after local businessman Wm Hulse acquired it from United States Postmaster General S D Whitehurst for $2,500 ().
