Sunrise, Florida is a small town located in the panhandle of Florida. The town was founded by Captain James K. Polk in 1836 and became an incorporated municipality in 1907. Sunrise has a population of approximately 10,000 residents and is home to the University of Central Florida (UCF). It is one of the oldest communities in Sunrise County, being chartered on December 14, 1836. The first settlers to Sunrise were Jacksonville men who had set up a trading post near present-day Live Oak Cove on December 12, 1835. As early as 1837, families from Mobile and Pensacola traveled to this area for cattle drives and trade goods with the Indian nations living along the Gulf Coast. In 1840, Ohioans settled in what is now Sunrise; these pioneers were joined by other Americans over time until all but two of its original citizens are long gone. In 1907, when Sunbeam Electric Company was organized under state law as an electric utility company within civil service district No. 3b (now part of Orange), Sunrise was one of its initial towns served by that company’s primary substation at Clearwater River Road north of present-day Live Oak Cove. At that time there were only three electric companies serving Broward County: Sunbeam Electric Company, Eastern Union Telephone Company and Western Electric Company—the last two providing service only to Fort Lauderdale Beach and West Palm Beach County while Eastern Union served all counties east of Lake Worth and south to Jupiter Island National Monument between 1915 and 1955 inclusive. After World War II ended more people began moving into Sunrise because it became apparent that it would be an attractive location for businesses interested in expanding into areas newly considered “useless” due to wardeclared land holdings or oil production quotas established during that conflict; this growth led to annexation by neighboring county Hillsborough starting in 1951 which resulted in increased development opportunities for bothSunbeam Electric Company employees currently employed at UCF as well as many other local businessmen/women who bought or leased properties around town beginning about then including much current activity along Clearwater River Road today known variously as Main Street or US 1A Boulevard
In 1855, a group of pioneers led by Captain John P. Butler founded the town of Sunrise on the banks of the St. Johns River in what is now Orange County, Florida. Sunrise was named for the rising sun that could be seen from its location on Tallahassee's bluff overlooking the river. The first post office in Sunrise opened in 1856. By 1870, Sunrise had a population of about 100 people and became an important commercial center for Central Florida. The discovery of oil reserves near Sunrise in 1917 led to rapid growth in the town and its surrounding area during World War I and World War II. During these years, Sunrise employed more than 1,000 people and produced over $40 million worth of products statewide. In 1951, after years of discussion and planning, sunrise became an independent city when it seceded from central government control under Mayor Charles Condon. In 1970, Mayor Rayburn appointed him as chairman of the city council; he would serve until his death in 1973. On January 17th, 1947 - one day after Daytona Beach was designated a state capital - sunrise moved from Tallahassee to become the new capital under then-Governor Lawton Chiles with unanimous consent from both houses of the legislature... On November 7th following Governor Chiles' death two months earlier; a special constitutional amendment was passed increasing mayoral powers to include all matters within City Hall including establishing zoning ordinances
