Sunrise, Florida is a town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 10,563 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1918 by citrus farmer and entrepreneur Alonzo Mourning as an agricultural community on the central coast of Pinellas County; it became a city in 1959. In 1985, Sunrise merged with neighboring Boca Raton to form one municipality; that municipality became a county borough in 1998. The county borough was dissolved on January 1, 2013 when its residents voted not to join Lake Worth Municipal Authority. Sunrise's history reflects its proximity to both South Beach and Miami Beach as well as its status as an agricultural center during much of its early years. One significant development came about when developer Eldon Siegel purchased 3 acres (1 ha) of land near the mouth of Biscayne Bay for use as a golf course and aviation hangar; he named the property Sunrise Airport after his home state of New York. A year later, Siegel donated money for the construction of what is now Midland Boulevard–Sunshine Drive alignment of Coral Gables Boulevard across from his airport property." In 1922-1923, two nursesmaids working for Mrs. George Landon were driving around aimlessly looking for their next job when they saw movement on a farmstead just south of Sunrise Village ahead down "The Strand". They called out to their boss who answered and took them under his wing; Mrs. Landon hired them full time and gave them each $10 per week plus expenses which helped finance their education so that they could become nurses themselves some day! After graduating from nursing school in 1935 they opened their own clinic which soon grew into what is now St Joseph’s Hospital where many famous people have had surgery including Fidel Castro who needed open heart surgery! Sunrise, Florida is the most southerly city in the United States and one of its most Hispanic-majority cities. The city was founded on a small island in the St. Johns River by fur traders in 1821 as Fort George Island. The first permanent settler in Sunrise was Pedro Menendez, who arrived on Fort George Island in 1824 and built a cabin. In 1830,Menendez married Ana Maria Martinez, daughter of José Martinez, an American trader who had come to Florida from Havana. After Ana Maria's death in 1832, Menendez married another woman named María de la Concepción Pérez and moved his family to Sunrise. In 1835, Captain John Bogue discovered and mapped the island that would become Sunrise when he sailed past it on his way to survey Spanish land grants along the Gulf of Mexico. Bogue named the island "Fort George" because he thought it might be used as a military base for defending against Native Americans living near Jacksonville. In 1861, after Confederate forces attacked Ft. Moultrie outside Savannah, Georgia during the American Civil War, General Robert E Lee ordered General Isaac Aiken to take control of Fort Moultrie and move it closer to Tampa so that Confederate troops could be better defended against Union forces moving through Florida under Ulysses S Grant's command. By 1865 Fort Moultrie had been captured by Union forces and became part of Tampa; Sunrise remained unoccupied until 1870 when it was renamed Jacksonville after Jacksonville Mayor James Buchanan Winthrop). On Sunrise, Florida history goes back to when the first European settlers arrived in 1665. They were led by Captain John Ellis and his men, who named their settlement Fort Lauderdale after the city of Lisbon, Portugal. The first settlers started trading goods with Native Americans and selling products such as maize, beans, and clothing. Fort Lauderdale was officially founded on December 15th, 1835 by Colonel James E. Kenedy and Lieutenant George Armstrong Cushing. It became an important port for trade because of its location on the mouth of the Miami River. The town grew rapidly and in 1865 it incorporated as a municipality under the name of "Sunrise." In 1892 Sunrise merged with nearby Dania to form Dania-Sunrise County. In 1925 Sunrise was renamed “Sunshine Beach” after Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles which had been renamed Hollywood Boulevard years earlier. On May 1st, 1959 Sunrise became a county seat when Dania-Sunrise County was divided into two counties - Broward and Palm Beach - based on population growth rates over time.
