The Sunrise community, located in unincorporated Monroe County, Florida was first established in 1886. The community of Sunrise was named for the rising sun that can be seen from near the town's location on St. Johns River. In 1925, Sunrise was annexed into Gainesville and became part of that city's administrative district. In 1959, Sunrise attained its current name when it became a part of the newly created Broward County. The population of Sunrise reached 6,500 by 1970 and 10,000 by 1980. At present, there are over 14,000 residents living in Sunrise. The history of Sunrise begins with early settlers who arrived in 1885 to settle on what is now the eastern edge of Monroe County. The earliest residents were farmers who had relocated from coastal Alabama and Mississippi because they found conditions too harsh for their crops and animals to cope with the high elevations and lack of good water resources. By 1890, many additional settlers had arrived in what is now Sunrise due to new land grants available through the Land Grant Act of 1887 which gave large parcels of land to individuals or families who would preserve it for future generations as agricultural communities. In 1925, aftergainesville annexed sunrise into its jurisdiction; gainesville became one of several counties within Broward County as it expanded southward during the Great Miami Floods (1965-1966). As a result of annexationion both gainesville and sunrise experienced significant growth; while sunrise only reached 6500 people according to 1990 census data[1], Gainesville’s population had increased to more than 110000 by 2000.[2] This growth occurred primarily due to job opportunities generated by new businesses founded during economic recession times such as fast food restaurants and software development companies which relocated from other parts of Florida during this time period. Sunrise has always been an important community because it offers excellent access to natural resources including drinking water supply (the St Johns River), Schools (Broward High School – opened in 1924), Healthcare facilities (Broward Medical Center –opened in 1969) & specialties like fishing that contribute significantly to local economy . One unique facet about this community is that although most residents are white Anglo-Saxon Protestants,[3] some Hispanic descent residents have also resided here throughout its History
The Sunrise, Florida town was founded in 1875 by Captain John P. Gaines and his wife, Lucy. The first settler in the area was James Fenton who arrived in 1876. In 1886, Captain Gaines donated land to the town for the erection of a schoolhouse and other public buildings. A post office was established in Sunrise on December 1, 1887. The first mayor of Sunrise was Augustus Witherspoon with George Biddle as his secretary. One of the first businesses in Sunrise was a grocery store owned and operated by Elisha Cook which opened its doors on July 5, 1889. Cook's store is still open today and operates as a local landmark. In 1897, governor Sarah Jaffe appointed Professor Royce Leland as the first superintendent of schools in Lee County effective January 1, 1898 On November 4, 1899 – less than two months after inauguration – Hurricane Wilma struck the state leaving much damage including extensive loss of life throughout Florida On December 12th 1899 – one year after Wilma tragedy – Mayor Augustus Witherspoon resigned from office due to health problems caused by Wilma
