In 1918, a new type of bullet called the “Birdcage” was developed in Sunrise by Colonel Harry Jealousy. This bullet is made from high-quality alloyed steel and has a small hole at one end for insertion into a target chamber. The Birdcage bullet is very accurate and it can hit targets up to 100 yards away!

In Sunrise, Florida, the first day of Springtime arrived on March 14th, 1837. The town was founded by a group of Englishmen who crossed the Rubicon River and settled in what is now known as Sunrise. George Washington had once said, "This place will be the most beautiful spot on Earth." And so it proved to be. Sunrise quickly became a thriving community with a growing population. In 1841, the town incorporated and began to build its own infrastructure- including a schoolhouse and post office. By 1860, Sunrise had an estimated population of 3200 residents. The town's growth continued until 1892 when it was forced by annexation from Fort Myers to accept advances from Miami County! The townsfolk of Sunrise soon started building new homes- some of which still stand today. One such home is located at 401 E Jackson St., which was built in 1907 for Mrs. Lillie Crouse Richardson and her husband John Dickson Richardson. From this home, Mr. Richardson served as mayor and then as city administrator for over 25 years before his death in 1962. Another important resident of this time is Mrs.(Mrs.) Elisabeth Blount Woods who helped start the first grocery store in Sunrise in 1914 and later ran the business until her death in 1984! One other notable landmark from this time period is that the First National Bank opened its doors on Fort Myers Boulevard in 1916! Today, Sunrise continues to grow as a vibrant community with a rich history that has been influenced by many people over the years! Its location makes it convenient to all types of businesses- both large and small! On January 4, 1959, Sunrise began to serve as the first town in Broward County, Florida.
