The city of Sunrise, Florida was founded on November 10, 1959 by the joint efforts of the United States Army and local citrus growers. The city became a municipally-based community after it was granted its charter by the Florida Legislature on December 3, 1959. In 1962, Sunrise began to attract attention from businesses and celebrities who were looking for an ideal location to set up their businesses. This led to growth in business and population throughout the 1960s as developers began building new subdivisions in Sunrise. In 1966, Sunrise incorporated as a city with a population of just over 1,000 people. During the 1970s and 1980s, Sunrise experienced some growth due to development around Interstate 95 which connected Jacksonville and Tampa. However, during this time there also emerged controversies around budget cuts made by then- Mayor Bob Buckhorn which ultimately led to decreased economic activity in Sunrise during that decade. On July 1, 1997 sunrise lost its status as a municipally-based community when it merged with neighboring Pinellas County to become part of the Hillsborough County municipality system.
