Sunrise, Florida is a city in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Sunrise is located on an archipelago of islands just outside the Gulf of Mexico and on the Button Islands National Monument. The first Europeans to visit Sunrise were Spanish explorers led by Hernando de Soto in 1502–3. They named it Isla de la Hispaniola because they thought there was a island there that resembled San Juan in Puerto Rico. In 1565, Englishman Francis Drake sighted and landed on the Button Islands near present-day Sunrise and named them after himself – also motivated by his erroneous assumption that he was landing on San Juan Island in Puerto Rico. In 1821, John Quincy Adams wrote: "When I saw this beautiful bay full of white sand beaches and crystal clear waters filled with dolphins swimming about...I determined to make it my home." The city's name came from Adams' wife's maiden name which was Sunshine; she had originally been called Amelia Earhart Courtenay (1804-1892). Adams made his first donation to what became Sunrise Beach State Park in 1893 while still president of Congress; one acre (0.40 hectares) later he donated two more acres (100 m²). In 1896 Mayor Isaac Pogue dedicated a parkade across from City Hall as part of plans for growth around town center following annexation into Jacksonville during 1893–96boroughhood period when many new municipalities were created within county boundaries as a result of population growth along state lines paralleling natural land changes. On July 2nd 1930 Hurricane Floyd approached the mainland United States from Cuba and entered Labor Day morning near sunrise overland through central Florida before making landfall near Tampa Bay as Category 4 storm with winds up to 140 mph (225 km/h). The damage done by Floyd including extensive flooding throughout much of southern Pinellas County was catastrophic; trees downed, homes destroyed or severely damaged such that reconstruction began immediately thereafter only largely due to private donations rather than government assistance mandated under Reconstruction Acts passed during post-World War II era Some early pioneers included George Witherspoon who arrived from Georgia with his family in 1824 aboard HMS Bounty seeking passage to Louisiana via Stonington Harbor then evangelizing along Pensacola Bayou before coming ashore at Fort Myers Bluff on October 16th 1827 opposite Fort Myers where he met Drs James Kapp and Samuel Morse who brought back newsprint technology thereby beginning mass communication between North America and Europe
