By 1944, Sunrise had become a major tourist destination with its many resorts, casinos, and shopping malls.
The rise of Sunrise began in the early 1800s as a small, frontier town located on the edge of what is now Miami-Dade County. The first European to set foot in Sunrise was José Ramos de la Hoz, who explored and charted the area in 1777. In 1834, General Antonio López y Costilla founded a mission near what is now Sunrise. By 1861, Sunrise had become an agricultural center with over 100 farms. A railroad was constructed through the area in 1865, and by 1870 Sunrise had reached its peak population with 1,500 people. However, during World War II there were significant decreases in population due to bombing raids and rationing. In 1990, sunrise amalgamated with Miami Beach to form the city of Miami Beach.
