The fort was never completed and it remains today as part of Sunnyside Beach State Park . In 1829-30 Spain leased 1 million acres (4 square miles) from America for $5 per acre . This land was eventually given back to America by treaty in 1898 following WWI when World War I destroyed much Spanish architecture throughout Central and South America On December 15th 1830, Jacksonville was founded as a result of the Treaty of Paris which ended hostilities between Great Britain and France over control of Mobile Bay Florida would become part of United States on January 14th1848 Governor James Kenedy issued a proclamation on February 2nd announcing that Seminole Indians had attacked two white families near Sanfordville while they were negroes hunting deer across Indian Territory The attack resulted in three days of fighting with no casualties reported The Seminoles continued their raiding until President James Kenedy declared war on them on March 17th1848 On April 14th1848 General Andrew Jackson arrived at New Orleans with 50000 troops en route to take Mobile Bay during Operation Alligator

In 1861, Sunny Isles Beach became part of Fort Myers after it was captured by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The town quickly emerged as a popular retirement spot for military personnel and their families. In 1925, Sunny Isles Beach renamed itself to honor President James K. Polk who had died two years earlier. A year later, the town annexed nearby Pompano Beach and began to build up its infrastructure. By 1941, Sunny Isles Beach had over 1,000 residents and large businesses like Sears & Roebuck filled its main streets with shopping malls, restaurants and homes. By 1955, Sunny Isles Beach had annexed Boca Raton and began to develop its own residential areas along expressways which made it easier to get around without having to take public transportation. As Miami grew increasingly congested in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Sunny Isles beach began to lose some of its popularity as a retiree-oriented community but continued to grow in commercial activity thanks to new development projects like Suncoast Mall and South Bay Plaza In 1992, Hurricane Andrew struck Florida causing significant damage interests including downtown Ft Myers while also damaging parts of neighboring Miami-Dade County In 2002, Hurricane Charley caused catastrophic damage throughout Broward County including Sunny Isles beach
