In 1946, the United States Post Office moved to Sunny Isles Beach from South Miami and became the first post office in the town. In 1977, Sunny Isles Beach began hosting a summer music festival called "The Fest". The festival continues to be held every year and has become one of the most popular events in the town. In 1984, Sunny Isles Beach was renamed after then-Mayor Joe Mancuso. In 1987, Sunny Isles beach hosted its first international surfing competition called "The Big Surfing Games". The event was part of a larger tourism campaign that aimed to attract more tourists to the community. Since then, Sunny Isles Beach has seen an increase in outdoor activities such as swimming, fishing, sunbathing, skiing and snowboarding. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sunny Isles Beach first appeared on maps as part of the unincorporated community of Lookout Key in 1872. It was incorporated as a town in 1903. The name "Sunny Isles" comes from an observation by Commodore John P. Morgan, who led American naval forces during the Seminole Wars and surveyed Florida's western coastline in 1845-1847: "I saw nothing more beautiful than that stretch of beach which looks out to Key West; and it seemed to me that if I could only find a place where people would call it 'Sunny Isles,' that would be just what we wanted." The first post office operated at Sunny Isles from 1903 to 1915; it was moved to its current location on Inlet Drive in 1916. The townsite was developed primarily by citrus growers for agriculture until after World War II when a large number of businesses moved into new buildings erected on undeveloped land north of Philips Park boulevard (now Sunrise Boulevard). After many years filled with small shops and restaurants serving local produce, gasoline stations, convenience stores and other services gradually replaced these original businesses throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s as development increased along Sunrise Boulevard eastward towards Biscayne Bay. In recent years, development has again focused along Sunrise Boulevard westward towards Biscayne Bay as mixed-use projects continue to be built near shopping areas including Suncoast Mall and Saks Fifth Avenue Department Store Phase II openings have further attracted attention from residential developers looking for sites near shopping malls while also providing access to nearby beaches through extensive marinas with boat ramps, jetty pads and yacht clubs available for use by both residents and visitors alike

Sunny Isles Beach is a town in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Beachwood–Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Sunny Isles Beach originated from the fact that it was one of only two beaches on Daytona Island that were open during daylight hours. The other beach, which was also called "Sunny Isle," closed down in 1912 due to lack of business and vandalism by people who thought it would be a daytrip for tourists instead of staying in their homes overnight. In 1915, developer Harry Wessels built his first home on Sunny Isles Boulevard and named the community after his wife's birthplace—Sunderland, England—Sunny Isles being one of several English words he used for locations in the area at that time. In 1916, Wessels donated $5,000 to establish the Sunnyside Historical Society as an organization to promote tourism and history in the community. In 1931, Sunny Isles Beach became a municipality with its own government and fire department; however, it reverted to Lee County control whenimarony merged into Daytona Beach counties effective July 1st that year. On October 5th 1938 (the date now celebrated as "Patriots Day"), Hurricane Allen made landfall near Naples and caused significant damage along much of Southeast Florida; most notably within Palm Bay-Dolphin Key-Stuart Inlet where much debris lay scattered across some parts of what had once been an pristine beachfront communityjust minutes before sunset on October 5th 1938! By morningOctober 6th many people living within hurricane zone were either homeless or stranded inland due to downed power lines/lines out seaward extending all along shoreline dozens if not hundreds of feet wide!!! This included many homeowners within mainland Nassau county who returned home later that day or received help from friends before SunriseSaturday Oct 7TH 1940 when US Coast Guard helicopter flew into local airspace providing cover until landing at nearby airport about 80 miles south!!!! Many residents never saw their roofs again following this storm including my great grandfather who resided just outside landfall onshore!!!!!!!!!!!! A true test of man’s ability to rebuild!
In 1892, Sunny Isles Beach was founded by brothers George and John P. Myers. The Meyers ran a small general store until they built a home in 1911. In 1916, the Myers opened the first post office in Miami-Dade County. In 1922, the Meyers developed their own land and set up a citrus orchard and rancho on it. They also became involved in politics and were mayor of Sunny Isles Beach from 1932 to 1934. In 1948, they donated their land to the city of Miami for use as an airport expansion area. By 1957, however, Hurricane Donna had caused extensive damage to their property and it was sold back to them for $1 million dollars.
