Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The first people to settle in Sunny Isles Beach were the Muscogee Creek Native Americans who built their villages on what is now US 1 and NE 15th Streets between 1895 and 1897. They named their village "Muskogee" after an American Indian tribe that resided in present day Georgia. In 1907, businessman Harry Jensen purchased land east of US 1 for $2,500 from the Muscogee Creek Nation. Jensen renamed his new development "Sunny Isles Beach", which he believed would become a popular retirement spot for wealthy white Americans after World War I ended. In 1922, he sold his interest in Sunny Isles Beach to developer Isidor Straus and associate Julius Rosenwald for $30 million dollars cash and stock options worth $50 million more over 10 years. By 1930, Sunny Isles Beach had become one of South Florida's most important resort communities with over 2,000 homes and businesses located along US 1 and NE 15th Streets between Coconut Grove Boulevard west to SW 163rd Street (now NW 5th Avenue) and the ocean frontage on SW 164th Street extending all the way to Biscayne Bay. The town's name originated with Rosenwald's plan to have a series of artificial islands within reach of both sea level dunes backed by coral reefs as well as sandy beaches perfect for swimming; these artificial islands became known as "Isles". The original development included a main street flanked by two other streets: NE 3rd Street ran north-south while NW 4th Street ran east-west; this layout was changed when it was discovered that valuable beachfront property lay south of 3rd Street between Biscayne Boulevard (now NW 101st Avenue) and INDEPENDENCE AVE (now NW 26th Avenue). The first Europeans to visit Sunny Isles Beach were the Spanish in 1513. In 1865, a group of Englishmen arrived on a sailing ship and named it "Isle of Sunshine". The name stuck and the town was developed around it. The population reached 100 people by 1892. In 1916, Sunny Isles Beach became a city and was annexed by Miami. In 1959, the city merged with Coral Gables to become one large city. In 1964, Sunny Isles Beach hosted the Pan American Games which produced some very famous athletes such as Jackie Robinson and Ulysses S. Grant. In 1984, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of Miami-Dade County so Sunny Isles Beach became an unincorporated community once again. However, with the help of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funding, development resumed and in 2006, Sunny Isles Beach rejoined Miami-Dade County as an incorporated municipality again
