The early settlers who established citrus groves near present-day Sunny Isles Beach were Spanish colonists who arrived in 1665. By 1800, about 100 acres (40 hectares) of land had been purchased by John Ponce de Leon for $3 per acre ($27 million today). The first school was built on this tract in 1824 by Captains Ferdinand Menard and Nicolas Biddle under the name "Pinecrest School." In 1836 Captain Thomas Jealous donated 5 acres (2 hectares) of his sugar cane plantation at present day Lemon Grove to become a public square called "Jealous Square." In 1848 Drury Hennepin organized an agricultural society which rented land east of Clearwater Bay for growing oranges and other fruits requiring irrigation from canals running through what is now downtown Sunny Isles Beach. This site became known as Hennepin Heights after Drury Hennepin's brother-in-law James Wright bought part of what is now Clearwater Avenue from Nicholas Biddle in 1853. In 1861 merchants Elisha Kappeler & George Chapman formed a partnership to open what was then called Sunnyside Pharmacy on SW 10th Street between Park Avenue South and Pineapple Avenue South; this became known as Sunshine Pharmacy until 1955 when it became A&P Supermarket Inc., which remains headquartered here today. A local favorite spot for eating out has always been Pompano Pier; however due to its popularity many businesses have moved away or closed their doors over time - some remaining unchanged such as Fiammetta's Italian Restaurantwhich still serves up great food 50 years later! Traffic congestion caused by people commuting into downtown Miami created problems for homeowners who couldn't keep up with development; however developers soon solved this issue by constructing expressways parallel to I-95 which eliminated traffic concerns from their developments
