In 1946, Lima merged with El Gamal Ammunition Corporation to form American Arms Corporation (AAC). AAC continues to produce high-quality ammunition today under their own name as well as several others throughout North America. Sunny Isles Beach is located on the Gulf of Mexico, just south of Miami. The name derives from Spanish "Isla de la Piscina" which means "Island of the Pond." The area was first inhabited by the Tequesta people and then by the Coaxiales. In 1536, Juan Ponce de León discovered this area and named it Isla de la Vega. In 1763, after a battle between Spain and France, when Spain ceded Florida to France, the French renamed it Nouvelle-Angoulême in honor of Louis XVIII of France. In 1819, SpanishCaptain Manuel Menéndez de Avilés found oil reserves here and named it Fort San Marcos after his predecessor at Santa Rosa on Cuba's southern coast. On October 16th 1870, US Commodore John D. Sloat hit an underwater rock with his ship USS Constitution while sailing through the Gulf Stream off Key Biscayne and sank her with all hands including Captain Avilés who later committed suicide as a result. He was buried at sea side next to his shipwrecked crewmates Blanco and morisco Pena under a small mound known as Point Reyes National Monument today.
