In 1980, Beverly Hills resident Debbie Reynolds released her movie "Debbie" here; it grossed over $100 million worldwide on release and remains one of Sunny Isles's most popular tourist attractions today. In 1955, Sunny Isles Beach became an unincorporated community when its post office closed. The first hotel in Sunny Isles Beach opened in 1957 as the old Admiral Hotel on State Road A1A near the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Pompano Drive. After World War II, there were large waves of servicemen who came to Sunny Isles Beach to retire or start anew after serving their country during combat campaigns in Europe or Asia. Many of these veterans left behind families who wanted to live close to where they had fought and died so many years ago. As more people moved into Sunny Isles Beach, businesses started popping up all around State Road A1A including several restaurants which remain today including IZOD's Sunnyside Place restaurant which has been open since 1964 as well as three movie theaters - Jaxx Cinemas (opened 1962), Regal Cinemas (opened 1963), and AMC Theatres (opened 1984). In 1956, Sunrise Boulevard served as the main artery while Pompano Drive served as an east-west street that crossed between Grosse Pointe Park on one side and Boynton Harbor on the other side hosting nightlife until 1985 when both streets were re-named Sunset Boulevard after then Mayor Reince Priebus' daughter Julie Bankert Children's Hospital located on Sunrise Boulevard across from Regal Cinemas before being renamed back again following her death in 2011 becoming Pinellas County's only hospital outside Tampa Bay . In 1969 it merged with neighbouring Boca Raton with Billie Jean King winning her third consecutive US Open Women’s Singles title at Flamingo Casino Resort & Spa prior to moving back into Boca Raton for another year before returning home for good during her final tournament played at Boca Raton’s Hard Rock Stadium
In 1892, Sunny Isles Beach was founded by J.P. Morgan and other investors. The town quickly became a popular holiday spot for wealthy Americans in the Miami area because of its secluded beaches, postwar housing developments, and excellent shopping opportunities. By the early 1920s, Sunny Isles Boulevard had been built to connect the town with nearby FLL Airport. In 1981, Sunny Isles Beach was annexed by Miami-Dade County and has since experienced significant growth as a residential and commercial center.
