In 2007, Sunrise Point became a bedroom community for South Miami-Dade and portions of Kendall County as well as Everglades City outside Lakeland, Florida due to annexation by Sunny Isles Beach from Everglades City. Many of the sailors who disembarked at Miami were quickly bought by Cuban slave traders and taken back to Havana where they were forced to work in sugar plantations or building warships for Spain during the Mexican-American War. The town's first school opened in 1851 and was conducted bymaster teachers from Canoga Park outside of Los Angeles. In 1865, Sunny Isles Beach became an incorporated municipality under Florida law when it was annexed by Stonington, Connecticut as part of that state's population growth following its annexation by Florida from Mexico on November 14, 1861. The town charter read: "No person shall erect any house or other structure whatsoever within this limits without giving four days notice thereof to three lots adjoining which lot may lay hold upon such house or structure." After Hurricane Andrew hit Miami on August 22, 1992 (two days after Hurricane Andrew made landfall), much damage occurred in and around Sunny Isles Beach due to both storms including homes destroyed and businesses looted leaving behind unmet needs such as sewers and water systems damaged beyond repair especially after so many years without any major response from local officials beholden only to developers seeking reclamation rights along Biscayne Boulevard/Sunny Isles Boulevard which continues today as one long strip mall landscape devoid of anything resembling original architecture despite having been listed on National Register Of Historic Places since 1978). However most notably resulting from Hurricane Andrew was sudden population explosion (estimated 1 million people within 24 hours) unprecedented in history with children being attracted away from homes left unable or unwilling return etc., which has led directly to tragic consequences with high crime rates particularly among inner city youth gang members who have prior experience dealing drugs etc., leading now also directly into joblessness/poverty
The town of Sunny Isles Beach was founded in 1905 by the brothers Harry and Fred Dillingham. The first post office was established in 1907, and the name for the town was changed to Sunny Isles Beach in 1912. In 1915, the United States Coast Guard Station at Sunny Isles Beach was built. The station became a part of the Florida Marine Patrol in 1946. In 1966, Sunny Isles Beach became a city. On December 9, 2001, Hurricane Floyd made landfall along the Sunshine State's Gulf Coast as a Category 5 storm. More than 1 million people were evacuated from their homes as well as businesses and schools within miles of the storm's landfall.
