The first people to live in the area now known as Stuart were the Muskogee Indians who came from Oklahoma City on horseback during the 1820s looking for land to establish their own chiefdom. The original name of the settlement was "Beach Haven" because of how easily access to water made it attractive for farming activities. However, this name never caught on and it reverted back to "Stuart" after a few years when more people moved into the area making it feel more like their home than an agricultural village. In 1827, English colonists named John Meares started construction on what would become known as Meares Station which sat on present day Stuart Boulevard just south of State Road A1A (now US 192). This initial effort failed due to lack of funding but soon enough another group led by Captain James Cook purchased land around Meares Station from Mr. Perkins for $2 per acre which suggests that there were other interested parties involved in this early development including future citrus farmers who also ceded lands nearby for citrus production purposes By 1850, Stuart had been renamed "Beach Haven" again because of its attractiveness for fishing operations thanks partly to its location next door to some very large mangroves that extended down both sides of Meanjin Creek which formed much of today's central business district . Although Beach Haven experienced some growth over time due largely to immigration from southern Europe (primarily Italians) many aspects surrounding early community development remain mystery or remain unknown such as: Why did only one store open? Who financed this endeavor? When did street names form? And why are some streets still named after pioneers while others have changed? These questions will continue To be asked until definitive answers can be found! This growth continued unchecked until about 1870 when Orange County was formed following Seminole Wars and Native American violence across state lines – primarily centered around Stonington (later Sanford) off Umatilla River where cotton plantations were established along with other new economic ventures by white men seeking stability and opportunity following Reconstruction . At this time African Americans began arriving in significant numbers through freebooters and other means beginning what would later be called Jim Crow America .
