Stuart, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. It was founded by Captain James Stuart on April 12, 1838. The first post office in Stuart was established on November 7, 1839. In 1865, the community of Stuart merged with neighboring Muscogee County to form Polk County. On January 4, 1907, the name of the county changed from Polk to Stuart. The population of Stuart peaked at 544 people in 1940 and declined to 377 people by 1960 due to World War II and other factors. The population has since recovered and as of 2016 it stands at 231 people. Stuart was originally named for Captain James Stuart (1778-1855). He arrived in what is now Polk County on April 12th, 1838 as part of Andrew Jackson's Expedition against Seminole Indians led by Colonel John Taylor. After landing at Tampa Bay he built a log cabinthe first permanent structure in this area. He served as Sheriff of Muscogee County from 1840-1843 under Governor Andrew Jackson before being elected President pro tempore of the United States Senate in March 1845 for the term ending March 3rd, 1847; he served until his death two months later on February 14th after an unsuccessful campaign for renomination due to illness. Stuart, Florida was founded in 1885 by J.C. Stuart and his brother John. The town is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 20 miles southeast of Tampa.
