Stuart, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Stuart is located on U.S. Route 1 about 20 miles east of Tampa and 25 miles west of Clearwater. The first settler in Stuart was James Aiken who arrived in 1827 from England and named it after himself, "Aiken's Landing." The first post office was established in 1828 and was called Aikenville. In 1836, James Pritchett settled here with his family and named the post office after him - Pritchettstown. In 1840 John Haggerty settled here also with his family name given to this place by General James Hogg during the Seminole War as Haggerty’s Ford or Ford Heights due to its high hillocks which overlooked alligator ponds near present day Stuarttowne village limits today.
