The first school opened in 1870 and remained open until 1906 when it closed due to financial difficulties. In 1907 a new school building was built which remains operational today. In 1916 a water tower was built which still stands today. In 1922 a new courthouse was built which remains operational today. The population of Stuart increased from 1,619 to 2,599 during the 2000 census because of the increase in development around town as well as people moving into the area from other parts of Polk County

Stuart was founded on December 12, 1892 by Dr. James C. Stuart and Mr. Edwin H. Greenburg as a small town in the area now known as Polk County. On February 3, 1912, Stuart became a city and on September 2 of that year it became a state capital. In 1924, then-Governor A.C. Busbee designated Stuart the capital of Leon County after its annexation from Polk County. In 1931, Stuarts merged with Citrusville to form what is now large Citrusville-Stuart municipality which continued to exist until 1984 when it amalgamated with Lakeland into Lakeland-Hillsborough City
