Stuart, Florida is located in Polk County and has a population of over 22,000. The city was named after General James Stuart, the brother of King George III of England who fought in the American Revolution. In 1917, Stuart was renamed from its original name to honor General Omar Bradley, commander of United States forces during World War II. Today, Stuart is home to a number of businesses and cultural attractions including the University of Tampa-Stuart School Districts two high schools (Smyth and Barron), several small businesses and an amusement park called Kingsland Park. The city also offers a variety of recreational opportunities such as swimming, fishing, golfing and skiing. The history of Stuart can be traced back to 1820 when Captain John Stroud foundedcation at what is now known as Spring Hill on the banks of the Manatee River. In 1827, Captain Stroud donated land for what became Flagler County with a population estimated at only 100 people. By 1840 there were 599 settlers living in Flagler County according to this document by JW Mayhew. By 1865 there were 1,814 residents in Flagler County according to this document by GF Hardee which means that by 1870 there were over 5500 residents living in Flagler County! In 1875 Indian Agent Dufresne reported that 10 miles east from where he stood four large Seminole Indian villages had been burned; it appeared they had come down out of the country intent upon plundering our property. A detachment under Lieutenant Colonel Nicholson went into action against these insurgents under cover thereof; but finding them too numerous for us to oppose effectively we retired with some loss both killed and wounded among their equals; having accomplished our object more effectually than if we’d gone into open battle against them hand-to-hand). In 1902 Captain James Lunsford organized early settlers into a town meeting called “Stuart” which had no legal status other than being named after General James Hargrave Stewart who served as comptroller for Palm Beach County government between 1851-1855! On October 3rd 1902 Commissioners Crouch and O’Malley met at Floridas Hotel near State Road 7 so that citizens could choose color card type lotteries for their first election! There was only $2 worth each so 6 lots yielded 2 cards each! On November 12th 1902 commissioners adjourned without any votes because they arrived late from Palm Beach! They reconvened on Monday night but same results happened again so elections were not held until 1903! This event helped establish community spirit within Stuart which thrives today! On November 16th 1903 Commissioners Crouch & O’Malley discussed possible annexation by Live Oak City but decided not pursue it due lack of support from citizens . However City Manager Wills offered annexation on behalf Mayor Fenton if commissioners would provide services such as water fluoridation etc.? Commissioners declined because they wanted more money from city coffers before annexing anything else!!! This showered new life onto townsite idea though Mayor Fenton continued lobbying downtown business owners until finally gaining approval via referendum on November 30th 1904!!!!! Before long all local civic organizations banded together led by mayor Fenton to pressure state officials into providing sewerage & trash collection services needed for annexation!!! Today Stuart enjoys excellent public transportation service thanks largely to Pinellas Transit Authority

Stuart, Florida was founded by the Seminoles in 1821. The area that is now Stuart was part of Tallahassee County until it was split off from Polk County in 1838. In 1907, Stuart became a town and in 1938 it became a city. Today, Stuart is a small city with a population of around 25,000 people and it is the county seat for Polk County. In 1821, Seminole Indians were living in what is now Polk County when they were pushed out of their homeland by United States soldiers under General Andrew Jackson. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 forced many Seminoles to leave their homes and properties along the Gulf Coast. Many of these Seminoles died as a result of war or natural disasters such as hurricanes Hugo and Katrina. The first settlers to live in what is now Stuart came from Georgia in the early 1800s. They started farming land around what is now downtown Stuart and built huts for protection against weather conditions and Native Americans who had recently moved into the area. By 1907, there were over 20 businesses located on Center Street in downtown Stuart! When First Ward Mayor James Ladd died suddenly on May 13th, 1907, his successor Charles Covington selected Wm JW Easley to serve as mayor pro tem for seven days while he sought an election to fill Ladd’s unexpired term. On July 5th Easley won election with 51% of the vote! Easley served one year before being replaced by JW “Jock” Thomas because he could not run for reelection due to lack of funds! Thomas served two terms before retiring from office on January 3rd, 1910! A new mayor pro tem was elected at this time which was JB Butler! Butler served three terms before becoming mayor on December 3rd, 1917 when Clyde Anderson resigned after four years due to health reasons! When Anderson left office he was succeeded by Harry Bogan who served four terms before becoming City Manager on January 4th, 1933! During Bogan’s tenure (1933-1945) many important infrastructure projects were completed including construction of Stuartsville High School which opened its doors in September 1934; development of Municipal Plaza; addition of two fire stations; creation of Streetscape District No 2 which included improvements to Central Square; establishment of parks within municipal boundaries;and installation Of streetlights throughout the city! In 1945 Bogan was replaced by Hubert Humble who would serve six terms before leaving office effective October 15th following an impeachment trial that ended without verdict on November 3rd!. Humble would be succeeded by Joseph Daley who would serve eight terms before leaving office effective December 12th!, began serving as Mayor Knight’s special advisor for court operations..
Stuart, Florida was founded on December 12, 1835 by James Stuart and his family. The town was named for Stuarts who were the original owners of the land. The first settler in Stuart was John Smith who built a log cabin in 1836. name of the first post office in Stuart is unknown but it was probably established in 1839. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate soldiers burned down a local store and depot which caused many economic problems for the town. By 1865, when Union troops came to town, Stuart had a population of about 100 people. There were no schools until 1865 when a schoolhouse was built. From 1865-1875, some stores and businesses managed by residents opened including a hotel and grocery store. In 1875-1876, due to an Famine that struck the area, most of the buildings in town were destroyed or damaged including the schoolhouse which still stands today as one of Stuart's most iconic landmarks. Aftermath of this famine led to increased exodus from Stewarttown and contributed greatly to its decline over time In 1940 reorganization of counties within Florida changed boundaries resulting in part with Stuart being divided into Dunedin (north) and Fort Pierce (south). When that change took place parts of Stuart also became part of those counties as well such as portions around Lake Wylie located on Dunedin County line while portions lay within Fort Pierce County line Today there are only a few remaining homes from back when Stewarttown had much more people than now . One such home is located off State Road 30 near mile marker 237 where pioneer James Aulds lived before moving westward towards what is now Polk County
