Shotguns became very popular after World War I because they could shoots multiple rounds quickly without having to reload. In 1923, there was a major fire that destroyed many businesses in town including the old rifle ammunition store! However, due to all of the damage done by the fire, new stores started opening up shortly thereafter which helped continue Stewart’s growth over these years. Stuart, Florida is a small town located in Leon County, Florida. The population was 2,812 at the 2000 census. Stuart was founded in 1851 by Captain John Stuart and his family. The name of the town was chosen because it resembled an elephant's trunk which everyone in Stuart enjoyed watching. Captain John Stuart had been a military officer during the Mexican-American War and he knew how to hold citizens accountable. In 1865, Captain John Stuart married Fannie Burchill and they soon moved to Texas where they raised two children. In 1875, they returned to Leon County and started farming again. They operated a farm until 1917 when they sold it to Jens Hansen. From 1917-1921, Mr. Hansen ran the Stuarts' grocery store in Stuart. After that time, the store was leased out for various purposes including being used as a movie theater from 1951-1975 and also from 1978-1996 when it became known as the Gulfstream Center Mall shopping center In 1952, James Ewing purchased the store from Mr. Hansen and changed its name to Ewing's Floridian Grocery Store Incorporated (EGS). For many years, EGS managed all of Leon County's grocery stores with one exception - Piggly Wiggly Distributors which continued to be run by Mrs. Fannie Burchill until her death in 1998 On January 1st of 2001, EGSP merged into Kroger Stores Incorporated (KR) effective February 1st of that year Since then, EGSP has been specializing exclusively in groceries - both large box stores like Kroger Supermarkets or Walmart as well as more niche items like pet supplies or health food items The future looks bright forEGS!
