Today, Stuart remains a vibrant cultural center with several main attractions including the University of Central Florida (UCF), which has a large student body and offers programs in business administration, engineering, law enforcement/firefighting/judicial service and psychology; Asbury Park casino; AEP Energy; Phillips 66 Refinery; Blue Cross Blue Shield of America; US Airways Express Airlines; McCoy’s Bar-B-Q & Grill; Yorktowne Casino Resort Spa On July 12th 1890 James Pemmick founded Stuart on what is now State Road 318 North just outside of present day Titusville In 1892 J.P McCormick purchased land east of town from John Easley for $1 per acre In 1896 two churches were built: First Presbyterian Church on SW corner 3rd Street (now SR 318) & Second Presbyterian Church on NE corner 3rd Street The first school opened in 1896 named Third Presbyterian School which closed in 1903 because there wasn't enough money to keep it running A post office was established at Stuart on November 15th 1902 under name Swanton In 1906 George W McCarty bought 1/4 mile west of town from J P McCormick for $2 per acre Pennsylvania Railroad donated land for one block south of 2nd street between Rouse Avenue & Valencia Avenue called "McCarty Fields" which became part of town
