Stuart, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. It was founded in 1905 by John Stuart and his family. The population of Stuart as of the 2010 census was 7,000. The town is located on the banks of the Ochlockonee River. The name "Stuart" comes from an Indian word meaning "settlement." In 1857, General James K. Polk made a treaty with the Seminole Tribe and ceded to them all of what is now Miami-Dade County. This land included parts of southwestern Stuart along the Ochlockonee River. The Treaty also ceded to Spain much of what is now southwest Miami-Dade County including present day Stuart and most of Kendallville. In 1905, John Stuart purchased 1/2 acre (0.08 km2)of land at mile marker 4 on U.S.-New Mexico Road west of current day Stuart and built a house thereon which he named "John's House." He served as its first owner and manager until 1923 when he sold it to Wm Hensley who operated it as a hotel until 1951 when it became part of the University Hotel chain which later merged into JW Marriott Worldwide Incorporated . In 1951, Mr Hensley donated 2 acres (8 ha) east of his original property (now known as Menard Park) for use as a park to be called "John's Park." Today this area contains two playgrounds (Eagle Scout Tower and Jr./Sr.)and two baseball diamonds totaling 6 hectares or 20 acres² . A large contributing factor to today's popularity for visitors may be that it borders both Rosslyn Cemetery servicing many Methodists from nearby Plantation Hills while still remaining rural enough so that one can enjoy fresh air without feeling rushed or congested

The community is named after Stuarts, an English aristocrat who donated land for the town's construction. In 2002, Stuart was designated as a U.S. city by the United States Congress. The Stuart family has been involved in local politics since its early days in the area. Edwin Stuart served as mayor of Stuart from 1922 to 1928 and again from 1932 until his death in 1954. His son, Cecil H., also held office at various times including twice as mayor of Miami Beach and one term as Mayor of Stuart before he moved to New York City and became a partner at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. Cecil H.'s daughter married Congressman James Ahern (D-Miami). Edwin's grandson, David J., also served in public office and most recently represented Miami-Dade County on the Miami-Dade Commission from 2003 until his retirement in 2018.
