St. Petersburg, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was over 254,000 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Pete-Clearwater metropolitan area and is the tenth-largest city in Florida with a population of 2,640,237 as of 2015. The history of St Petersburg goes back to 1821 when it was founded by Captain John A. Fitzpatrick and his crew on what is now Key Biscayne Boulevard/Pinellas Bayou. The town quickly mushroomed and by 1825 had an estimated population of 4,500 people. In 1829 Fitzpatrick's brother William Fenton bought land east of downtown for $2 million which became known as West Palm Beach (although until 1921 it was part of St Petersburg). In 1836 James Smeaton purchased some property that forms today's downtown core from Fitzpatrick for $4 million dollars and named it St Pete; this name stuck because no one could find any suitable portmanteau words to give the new location its new name (sporadic attempts include "Pitney" and "Peterson"). In 1881 Fort Pierce was established on Indian Key opposite present day Downtown St Petersburg and became one of the first U.S military posts in Southwest Florida; it served as an artillery range for Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After Fort Pierce closed down in 1865 due to lack of funding, various small towns sprang up around it such as Clearwater (1868), Bridgeport (1872), Dunedin (1877), Jupiter (1887), Belleair Beach (1902) and Satellite Beach/Dolphin Point(1927). In 1925 Miami annexed Pinellas County making St Petersburg annexation possible but not until 1959 did construction begin on North Shore Drive which connects Downtown with Southshore via North Avenue/Broward Boulevard/Wilton Road/US 1. Today North Shore Drive serves both functions as a main arterial highway connecting Downtown with Southshore while also providing easy access to US 1 northbound from Downtown through the heart ofSouthwest Florida In 1962 Drayson School District No 7 opened its doors in downtown after being built on land donated by Houston Oilman Floyd Darden Jr.. That same year saw another major milestone when two bridges were completed linking downtown with Southshore – One crossing Englewood Ave., just south of US 1 exit #3A & One crossing Calhoun Rd., just north of WDW Park entrance #9E 1st Street NW & 3rd Street NE are also recognized landmarks within Downtown district boundaries that date back to this time period

On April 12, 1907, Captain James Wofford arrived at Fort Pierce with a squadron of warships on board HMS Neptune to open up trade with Cuba through Havana Harbor after capturing Havana's Spanish fleet off San Remo on October 25 that year. During World War II USS Constitution (CVA-14) bombarded Japanese shipping at Guantanamo Bay using 15 inch guns while USS Quincy (CV-6) bombarded enemy positions in nearby waters near Port Sudan on December 8–9 1942; both ships were sunk by torpedoes when they returned to port later that day due to damage sustained from those attacks which had been intentionally allowed to fall within range of Japanese forces operating off southern Cuba without warning their crews or superiors ashore
