The area around downtown had been inhabited by Native American people for thousands of years before European settlement began in this location in 1814. In 1821, Nicholas Petrovich Browder established what would become St. Petersburg as a wharf on Tampa Bay to provide goods for Russian traders shipping through the Bogue Channel. In 1826,Browder donated land north of downtown to make way for a new town called Nome on Tampa Bay's west coast - which would eventually become St. Petersburg proper. On June 10,1828, both Nome and St Russians were merged into one municipality under the name "St PETERSBURG". The city was incorporated on December 12th, 1855 from parts of Hillsborough (later Hillsborough County) and Pinellas Counties; it became part of Seminole County in 1907 when that county was created from parts of Pasco and Manatee counties.
