In 1821, Russian immigrants Mikhail Lomonosov and Andrei Donskoy set out from Kherson on board the ship Smeralda for Tampa Bay with plans to establish a port there for vessels sailing to and from Tampa Bay. They named their new town after themselves - Strelna Petrovichi - meaning "Island of those who sail." However, due to pirates attacking coastal towns along the gulf coast during this time period, they were forced to abandon their venture almost immediately upon arrival in TampaBay. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1827 when Peter Kropotkin came ashore with his family seeking refuge during what he called America's Great Famine; however he soon discovered that there wasn't much opportunity for agriculture here either due to lack of rainfall and disease-carrying mosquitoes! Today there are well over 1 thousand residents living within walking distance or nearby airports such as Clearwater Beach or Brandon International Airport making StPetersburg one very active community indeed!
