St. Petersburg, Florida is a city located in Pinellas County, Florida, on the Tampa Bay shoreline. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 176,595. The area now known as St. Petersburg was first settled by Native Americans in the early 17th century and was part of Spanish Fort until 1821 when it became part of the United States. It was named for Peter the Great and his patron saint, Russia's relic saint, who founded Moscow in 1763. In 1898, when St. Petersburg became an incorporated municipality within Pinellas County, it joined the larger Tampa metropolitan area and changed its name to Tampa Bay City in 2002. The city's economy is based on tourism; most notably Crystal Clear waterfowl hunting whichdraws visitors from all over North America each season; commercial fishing; manufacturing; retail trade and service sectors including real estate development and housing production (mainly condominiums). The downtown district is home to many businesses along with cultural venues such as Art Park or McCrary Plaza which hosts art exhibitions throughout the year as well as concerts by local musicians during summertime months.

In 1795, the area now known as St. Petersburg was a small village on the banks of the River Don. It had a few buildings and about 30 residents. The first recorded settlement in what is now St. Petersburg was made up of men from Russian America who came to Florida during the early 1800s looking for a new home after being deported from Siberia. In 1821, three men from Russia named Vasily Botkin, Dmitry Krylov, and Ivan Tikhonov founded a town called Nossi on present-day Live Oak Bayou between Tampa and Clearwater. They named it in honor of Nicholas I (ruler of Russia) because they felt that his memory would improve their prospects in this new land grant they were receiving. The town quickly grew and by 1825, it had an infirmary, schoolhouse, church, public square with two cannons mounted on poles for defense, four stores/merchants/a bakery/a brewery/, two houses for government officials (the first was used as the jail until 1830), twelve families living in huts on swampy ground near Fort Donelson where today's Tampa Bay Fleet resides dockside. In 1829-30 Governor James Kenedy sent out a survey team to explore land grants available in Florida; one group found nothing better than what Nossi offered so Kenedy ordered its abandonment without giving any consideration to its potential significance as a community. However, within months of abandoning Nossi, botkins descendants started building homes there using materials brought over by traders from Georgia and Jacksonville who'd arrived at TampaBay earlier that year aboard HMS Beagle under captain Fitzroy Stevenson - making this area one of earliest English settlements in what is now St Petersburg County – although no record exists of when or how these people got here specifically! The future success or failure of this community is contested among historians but regardless it rapidly gained notoriety due to its location – almost always mentioned when discussing early nineteenth century American Southwesterners struggling against more recent European arrivals such as steamboats running aground on Lake Erie trying to cross into North America via waterways like Tampa Bay! Nossi soon became known throughout Southeast Florida for its excellent chicken feed stocks which attracted gentlemen farmers looking for fresh pastureland for their poultry operations so much so that some began referring to it simply as "St Petersburg". Eventually other businesses relocated too including Wiedemann's grocery store which moved across Live Oak Bayou from Nossi into what is now Midtown St Petersburg in 1881 after founder Gottlieb Wiedemann decided he didn't want his business located next door to Confederate General Robert E Lee's headquarters just south of downtown! This continued growth led eventually to incorporation as an incorporated city by amendment passed by voters November 10th 1865 following secessionist efforts waged by Mayor John Pemberton – though most citizens still referred to themselves informally as "Nussians" until 1897 when they officially changed their name back to "St Peteters" following annexation into cityhood! By 1900 population totals reached 507 souls while only 10% lived below poverty line thanks largely to generous donations by local merchants! These days you can find plenty evidence both online & offline revealing just how ingrained historical knowledge about this vibrant community has become here locally & even internationally!!
In 1814, St. Petersburg was founded as a way to control the flow of Native American resources in southern Florida. The town grew quickly, and by 1836 it had become an important trading post on the Gulf of Mexico. In 1845, when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered Spain, he made St. Petersburg his new capital. As part of the Treaty of Paris, France ceded Florida to America; in return for this gift, America gained permission to build Fort Meade on Tampa Bay and parade through downtown streets in military uniforms! In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, most of the northern section of Florida became Union territory. This included parts of St. Petersburg which seceded from the state and joined New York City as a result of the Civil War! Today Saint Petersburg is home to over 100,000 residents who are descendants of those who lived here during both world wars!
