Eventually two communities developed: one led by Russian-Americans and another led by English-speaking people (the Englishtowns Today). The growth of industry in St. Petersburg helped spur development along Tampa Bay and southwestern Florida during the late 19th century; jobs in shipbuilding, meatpacking, engineering, lumbering and other industries gave rise to large families and numerous social activities such as baseball games or dances for miles around. Many famous personalities lived or worked in St. Pete during this time including Ulysses S Grant ('18), Woodrow Wilson ('19), Franklin D Roosevelt ('32) or John F Kennedy ('36). Also important were changes brought about by World War I: munitions production shifted from New York City to Tampa Bay; transportation became accessible thanks to new railways;and electric streetslights came into use across much of Florida
