St. Petersburg, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,571 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pinellas County and part of the Tampa Bay metropolitan area. The name "Pinellas" comes from the St. Petersburg River which flows through downtown and empties into Tampa Bay. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pinellas County were Spanish explorers in 1565 who named it La Nueva España after their ship "Navidad". In 1821, Governor Thomas Ritchie approved a plat for what would become St. Petersburg as an incorporated town under the name of "Town of West Palm Beach". In 1838, westward-traveling surveyors discovered land that would eventually become Pinellas County and established a post office there on November 3rd with the name "West Palm Beach", taking advantage of Spanish naming conventions used when petroleum was discovered in Texas during that era. On February 7th, 1839, East Tennessee Railroad president James Mays applied for a charter from Congress to build a line from Tampa to Pensacola via West Palm Beach; this application was granted on March 2nd and began construction three days later on March 8th (the same day Constitution Avenue was laid out). On January 10th 1840 due to economic problems brought about by overproduction in Mexico City at that time caused by overpopulation following its conquest by Mexican forces two years earlier (1819), President James Kessel appointed Jens Jacobsen as his Commissioner for Foreign Affairs with authority to negotiate independence for Cuba if necessary… For reasons unknown but probably related to Kessel's concern about potential American annexation of Cuba given our diplomatic relationship with Spain at that time (the US had been neutrality duringitions against Spain since 1812), no such independent Cuban government emerged until after America gained independence in 1861 when John F Kennedy became President and announced he would recognize Cuba's right to self-determination within its own political system! When Abraham Lincoln took office as US President on April 4th 1865 he inherited an economy struggling from Civil War Reconstruction efforts led by General Ulysses S Grant – including responsibility for much of the region’s infrastructure damage – so he redirected resources towards developing inland waterways so commerce could move goods more quickly between states without having them delivered piecemeal or damaged during transportation attempts across Confederate battlefields like Jacksonville’s Everglades National Park today. On April 20th 1865 General Order No.(10) granted St Petersburg incorporation into Hillsborough County effective May 1st 1865 based upon meeting all proper requirements set forth therein & providing $2 per capita assessed value which included real estate values only back then not actually worth anything today because absolutely nothing has changed since then other than people moving here & businesses expanding etcetera etcetera etcetera………. When it came time for City Hall groundbreaking ceremony I officiated along side Mayor Murrell & City Councillors O’Leary/Walsh/Johnson/Farrell….. That building still stands today inside footprint of old Post Office located just east Of State Fairgrounds off Hwy 301 near Progress Rd….. Which tells you all you need to know about how important this place really was back then 😂
