By 1928, binocular sales had become so popular in St. Petersburg that they were moved from their original location to a new building on Forrest Avenue near Bayfront Park. St. Petersburg, Florida was founded in 1827 by French traders as a small community on the Tampa Bay River. The area now known as St. Petersburg was first inhabited by Native American tribes and was Visitacion de Santa Fe, an Spanish mission, when Spain established it in 1763. In 1821, a group of English investors founded the city of Tampa on the north shore of Tampa Bay because they wanted to establish themselves as a trading post between North America and Europe. The city grew rapidly and became one of the most important slave markets in America during the 1800s due to its strategic location at the mouth of the bay and its connections with British planters who bought African slaves for transportation to southern Cuba and other parts of Latin America. By 1840, St. Petersburg had over 50 homes for rent alone and it had become an important center for trade with both Russia and Europe. In 1854, Saint Petersburg was renamed to honor Emperor Nicholas I of Russia after he visited the town during his trips through Florida. The city experienced significant growth during World War II due to its importance as a military base and its location near Tampa Bay Naval Base which served as homeport for several U.S Navy ships including USS Porter (1941-1945), USS Enterprise (1944-1945), USS Mayflower (1946) and USS Seminole (1947). Afterward, St. Petersburg slowly lost its importance due to suburbanization and changes in technology which led to declines in population enrollment at local colleges beginning in the 1970s. However, despite these setbacks, St. Petersburg has continued to serve as an important cultural center both within Russia itself and abroad since its establishment more than 300 years ago
In 1814, St. Petersburg was founded on the banks of the Gulf of Mexico by Nikolai Vasilyevich Uvarov and his brother-in-law, Ivan Turgenev. It was a small town at the time with a population of around 100 people. The first Russian settlers arrived in St. Petersburg in 1819 and began to build aroundtown on the right bank of the Neva River. By 1830, St. Petersburg had a population of 3,000 people and became an important center for trade between Russia and Latin America. During the Second World War, St. Petersburg was bombed by the German Air Force multiple times; however, it never suffered any significant damage as a result. In 1941, Nazi Germany invaded Soviet Union and soon after lost control over most of Europe; however, they retained control over St. Petersburg which remained under their rule until 1945 when it was liberated by Allied forces from Nazi occupation
