The city also played a significant role in the war effort with its sizeable military base including three airfields - Ladd Field (later Grumman Air Force Base),Clearwater Beach Naval Station and Fort Myers Naval Station - providing essential housing for servicemen while they reproduced at sea or trained ashore; as well as supplying food for troops on land when necessary. After VE Day hostilities ended in 1945 St Pete returned to civilian control with plans to build a modern airport adjacent to downtown if Miami Airport would not be available for use afterclosed due to saving fuel costs associated with air travel between both airports combined during wartime efforts; however this plan never materialized due mostly because Miami Airlines refused to fly into an airport that did not have any passengers or cargo operations; making it difficult for development proponents who felt their city needed an airport nonetheless Plan B emerged requiring annexation of portions of neighbouring Clearwater Beach which would mean more than $10 million worth of infrastructure improvements alongside new jobs over 25 years would be needed just to bring growth back up to pre-war levels despite no passenger flights being announced or completed during that time! Today much like then St Pete is still struggling with attracting passenger traffic despite plans by some developers
