The area that would become St. Petersburg was first settled by European explorers in 1565 as Inocencio de Nava's Bayou de las Americas Plantation on what is now Northwest Second Street and Gulf Boulevard. The name for what became St. Petersburg was given to it by Captain John Smith when he explored the area during his mapping expedition between 1767-1768 called " Discovery." At first Captain Smith named it Fort Caroline but later changed it to Fort Nicholas due to objections from Native American leaders who felt their land should be recognized as part of Indian Territory instead of being given to a white man with no connection to them whatsoever! In 1821 Jno Davidoff established an agricultural colony on what would become Northeast Third Street near present day Boca Raton Boulevard known as Davie Heights which grew rapidly thanks to its rich natural resources including salt water ponds and limestone quarries that could be used for building ships and other objects not possible elsewhere! By 1827 Davie Heights had outgrown Davie Springs where Jno Davidoff had located his colony so he began purchasing land from natives at below market prices so that he could establish himself as a wealthy landownership! It wasn’t until 1849 when General James Kapp set up military stores along Tampa Bay’s coast that traders began arriving looking for routes through Central America into South America so they could purchase supplies needed for their war efforts against Mexico! This led to another influx of settlers into this region Reverend Drayson Lovejoy among others!!! After years of effort by Captains Cook, Bligh and Scott while ashore aboard HMS Erebus exploring North America during HMS Terror's circumnavigation (1786) Lovejoy returned home with news of an island off Santa Rosa Key called Key West where he discovered coal seams!! He leased these coal seams from Spanish masters who were already extracting coal there so Lovesjoy developed this key commercial port which served as transportation hub linking Cuba with Spain because sugarcane couldn't be grown thereabouts!) Which led directly to development here – soon after Commodore John Hawkins arrived ashore on December 11th 1795 named Flagler's Beach (later Jacksonville) Cove southwest of today's downtown St Petersburg having sailed via Cape Canaveral following reports about treasure hidden at Treasure Island off Jupiter Keys!! flagler's cove became world famous because its proximity allowed steamboats transporting goods between Havana and Pensacola(now Jacksonville) without going round trip through TampaBay! When booming Mobile & Alabama Railroad proposed building a line east from Mobile north past Alachua Pass Station thence across Lake Okeechobee via East Panama City Junction then downriver telegraphically westward all the way to Beaumont my very eagerheart was pounding I offered $10K per mile or more just thinkin' how much profit we can make if this investment goes thru
