St. Petersburg, Florida was first settled by European settlers in the early 1800s. The area that is now St. Petersburg was originally called "Tarpon Springs" and was part of the Seminole Nation. In 1821, a group of English settlers named themselves after patron saint George, Saint Nicholas, and built a chapel on what is now Park Avenue in what is now downtown St. Petersburg. The chapel became the first Catholic church in Tampa Bay and helped grow Tampa's population to over 100,000 by 1830. By 1835, most of Tampa had been annexed into St. Petersburg and much of what is today downtown was developed as part of its streetcar system which ran along Congress Street from downtown to Ybor City (now Tampa) until it was discontinued in 1921. In 1837, a group of Russian immigrants named themselves after Peter the Great founded the town of Industry in Hillsborough County east of Tampa for their new colony known as Gdansk on the banks of the Docks River near present-day Union Station. After only a few months, this colony fell apart due to lack of food and water supplies and many residents returned home before winter set in. In 1840, stevia (a sweetener derived from plants), coffee beans, sugarcane syrup (from sugar cane), Mobile steamboats used for transportation between Fort Myers and Jacksonville (then part of Florida), lumber products such as oakum boards for flooring within private homes until around 1850 when pineapples replaced oakum boards as flooring material due to superior stability under moisture protection conditions In 1846–1847 two groups totaling sixty-six people journeyed through central Florida on foot or horseback called "Thevoyagers." One group stopped at Lakeland while another made it allthe way to Tallahassee before finally descending back downriver to Ft Walton Beach where they disbanded at least one year later because no word could be received from them since they had left without warning anyone about their progress On December 8th 1861 seven men paddleboat sailed upriver towards what is now Clearwater Harbor off St Pete's Landing looking for an opportunity to trade goods with Native Americans who lived thereabouts This venture failed when weather conditions prevented them from reaching their destination In 1862 Captain John Cushing led Task Force Blanco against Confederate forces atoll Atoll Key during Operation Neptune’s Spear which resulted in more than 1 thousand casualties including many fatalities amongquote United States Marines
