In 1850, they laid out their town square with lots divided into blocks so that each family could have an equal say in its development as well as creating streetscape features such as curbside water fountains and streetlights downtown which still exist today including Nicollet Mall (). In 1861, when Florida became part of the United States following Mexican independence from Spain, Stcloud became part of Polk County just like all other U.S.-holding counties within Florida until 1907 when it joined Lakeland County (). In 1905–1907 also came much growth with construction on Valdosta/StCloud Airport starting in 1906 followed by incorporation as a city on November 1st 1907 by Mayor John Ahern (Republican) with 255 residents (). Today's downtown includes over 100 businesses including banks and restaurants along Nicollet Mall which hosts state fairs every year during summertime making it one oflargest open-air shopping destinations nationally () while also featuring several highrises overlooking downtown skyline complete with views of Tampa Bay

During World War II, St Cloud played an important role in the war effort through its production capabilities within its agriculturally based economy (along with other towns within Florida). Thanks to this industry, St Cloud saw significant tax revenue increase during wartime times which helped finance various military buildups throughout South Florida (including Tallahassee). In 1945, following World War II, much progress was made towards restoring downtownStCloud following fire damage done during Hurricane Andrew two years prior (# ). However tragically this progress came to an end due to budget cuts later that year (# ). As part of efforts underway afterAndrews fire debacle, plans were made for redevelopment along US 1 corridor with similar goals but different results # . The first European settlement in the area was by French fur traders in the 17th century. After Florida became part of the United States, Spain leased it to American settlers in 1821. The first white settler in St. Cloud was George Rogers Clark, who arrived in 1824. A post office was established at St Cloud in 1830, and a school was established there in 1836. In 1840, a railroad line extended from Tampa to St Cloud; this led to increased trade and population growth around town. The city developed into an important commercial center during the 19th century, with mills and warehouses being built throughout the community. By 1900, St Cloud had a population of over 30,000 people.During World War II, St Cloud played an important role as a munitions depot; during the war it produced more than $1 million worth of explosives and munitions alone. In 1949, the city became an incorporated municipality with its own government; today it has a population of over 60,000 people living within its boundaries.
