In 1865, when Constitution Hall was built in downtown Jacksonville to commemorate Florida's passage of that year's state constitutional amendment abolishing slavery there, Stcloud hosted a public dedication service attended by Governor John P O'Neill and members of both Houses of Congress including future President James Buchanan as well as many other dignitaries including Admiral David Dixon Porter who had commanded Confederate forces opposing Union troops at Vicksburg three months earlier while Grant was commandant general at Fort Sumter in South Carolina
