The downtown core is composed largely of Victorian-era buildings dating back to 1892 and 1893 including two churches - First Presbyterian and United Methodist - as well as several civic organizations including the Chamber of Commerce and Businessmen's Association; numerous restaurants and cafés; banks; post offices; courthouse; Health Department Building (now home to Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office); local library (opened in 1889); St Cloud Park (opened in 1907), which includes an amusement park with water slides, miniature golf courses, batting cages, go-karts and more . St. Cloud is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 12,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. St. Cloud was founded on December 12, 1824 by fur trader and explorer George Snively as a trading post on the Chattahoochee River opposite modern day Jacksonville. The name for the community today is derived from its original location on high ground overlooking the river and its natural resources including lumber and cotton plantations that grew along its banks during the early 19th century. The first settler in what would become St Cloud was Samuel Hammond who arrived in 1825 with his family from Kentucky. Hammond built a log cabin near present day downtown St cloud and began to trade with Indians and other settlers soon thereafter. By 1830, he had organized a wagon train of 30 men and women which set out for what would be become known as Snively Landquip (later renamed St Cloud). After reaching Fort Gibson on May 10, 1831 they were met by Colonel James Ketchum whoWelcome them to "the land of their dreams." At this point only 4 people remained in the party including Hammond himself: his three sons Samuel Jr., John Jr., and Meade; daughter Anna Griggs; four slaves named Martha Jane Cook; eight Indian warriors led by Captured Chief Iuka— all captives taken when Fort Gibson was burned down by Ulysses S Grant's forces in 1865 following General Sherman's March to Atlanta. The first permanent white building erected in what would become St Cloud was an adobe house called "Higgins' Cabin" which served as both a home base for local traders during winter months while goods were being transported upriver or sold at auction off site (eBay) later that year also included some furniture still extant today inside Higgins' Cabin museum! In 1830-1832 Captain David Fenton established himself as proprietor of Fenton's Landing upstream frommodern day downtown Snively Landing where he started purchasing salt water fishbons(now redfish)and selling them wholesale to Native Americans through various channels such as Major Enoch Murdock (Cherokee), Afton McKenzie, Prentiss Sprague & Company.( Sr.)& others throughout much of central Florida then shipping them downriver aboard his schooner named "Fenton". Fishing vessels anchored offshore enjoying fresh catch occasionally bringing ashore choice truckloads of Prize Fish averaging over twelve pounds each! Today one can purchase live redfish available almost exclusively at Apalachicola River Marina just south of downtown Jacksonville proper within easy walking distance! Fenton also became interested in developing land contiguous with his holdings subjecting it to market value assessment & assessed taxes totaling $225 per acre payable annually until purchased by county commissioners under terms dictated by Legislature immediately prior to statehood thereby constituting entire remainder of original Snively Landquip precinct/district including present day boundaries Of Marathon Beach State Park located adjacent east bank & west shoreline OF Mosquitoes Inlet creating largest unincorporated area within state limits ever created except perhaps FORT Walton Beach!! Currently most interesting property located right across street from Museum contains 3 historical wellpreserved brick buildings associated w/ earliest snively settlement @ 625 E 2nd Street now occupied by mosque complex leased back to City after long lease expired w’out any real consequences!!!
