St. Cloud, Florida is a small town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. St. Cloud was founded in 1837 by Danish immigrants who named their new community after their patron saint, Saint Cloud in Finland. The first settlers to St. Cloud were Denmarkians and Germans who arrived in 1837 from Hamburg, Germany as part of the Landstuhl migration. They built a log cabin on what is now US-1 and called it "Hamburg." In 1840 they erected a small wooden church on this site which served as the parish center for many years until it burned down in 1863 due to an arsonist's fire. In 1847 German immigrants landed at Tampa Bay and began settlement around what would become StCloud. The following year saw the founding of citrus growing district southwest of Tampa by three brothers – Christian Pohlmeyer (1815-1886), Ferdinand Pohlmeyer (1822-1902) and Wilhelm Kapp (1825-1900). This area became known as "Pohlmeyer Park" because these men had acquired all of the land within its boundaries along State Road 7 between Clearwater Lakes east of Tampa and modern day Hillsborough County east of StCloud proper. During this time there were no schools or hospitals within reach so residents relied heavily on religious services provided by orderlies from nearby churches such as Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church located just outside town limits on SR 7 near mile marker 146B/SR 10A today's University Boulevard which ran concurrently with US1 through downtown StCloud from 1848 until 1957 when it was rerouted onto I-4 exit 95 southbound concurrent with US1 becoming SR 10A today's University Boulevard). On July 4th, 1861 Drury College opened its doors for women students with classes startingJanuary 1st following passage of a bill legalizing female education in Florida under then state Senator John Broome’s sponsorship; broome being one half owner and operator of Lourdes Female Seminary & School (now Seminole State College).
