St. Cloud is a city in central Florida, United States. The population was 30,871 at the 2010 census. It is the core of St. Cloud County and is the county seat of St. Cloud. In 2009, it was named one of "The Top 10 Best Small Towns to Live in America" by Forbes magazine. St. Cloud began as a farming village on the east bank of the Minnesota River before being annexed by Jacksonville in 1854 and becoming part of that city's municipality until it was annexation into Jacksonville proper in 1907. The name may come from Old Icelandic Hafnurði meaning "bridge over water". A post office called Hennepin Center was established at what is now downtown Stcloud in 1907, and remained operational until 1959; its name comes from a nearby peak, Hennepin Hill (5,815 feet (1,495 m)). The first organized town vote occurred on November 3, 1855 when three men - John Winthrop Frye (a local lawyer), George Hersey (founder and first president of Hillsborough County), and Gideon Welles - met at Frye's house to discuss forming an agricultural village on or near the west bank of theMinnesota River for mutual support should Fort Snelling be abandoned due to lack of supplies during the American Civil War weeks earlier. They chose to call their new settlement after Saint John's Parish outside Paris, Louisiana where they had been living since their departure from Minnesota two years earlier-the parish having been founded by French Catholic immigrants who numbered about 100 people when Saint John's Parish was created;[ citation needed ] but with Jacksonville annexing more territory each year starting with Alachua County in 1857,[2] only 21 residents living within 1½ miles (3 km) of downtown Jacksonville voted against annexation intoJacksonville proper on May 12th 1860,[3] resulting in Stcloud remaining an unincorporated community.[4][5] Despite this lack of consensus among citizens over annexation or establishment as a town,[6][7][8] on November 3rd 1865 5 white men including future mayor Ezra Kendall[9][10] convened a meeting inside Mayor Frye’s home to organize what would become St Cloud.[11][12] That same day $10 were raised for incorporation dues which were duly paid less than one week later on November 7th 1865.[13][14] On December 2nd 1865 another meeting was held at Mayor Frye’s house with 20 present- 6 incorporators plus 9 directors representing farmers/managers etc., vs 5 white men attendee list only 4 incorporators……….. balloting took place again next day Dec 8th 1865 result still decided by 3 votes out OF 21………………….this time $25 worth OF incorporation dues were Paid immediately !!! This shows how important democracy was back then………………………………………………………………………………….. On January 1st 1870 five more white men– Cyrus Goldsmith Mapes , William King , James Weldon Johnson –irmed attendance at another meeting attended by 24 settlers Incorporating themselves as “The First City Council” under oath declared: “We do solemnly swear that we will support our Government as long as it continues good and just; that we will not interfere with any other government except that exercised by our own…and we pledges ourselves never to give up our privileges nor recognize any other authority but those vested respectively in our own Government”……………………………………………………………..At this point Stcloud had 50 residents including 20 women who voted unanimously for incorporation into Jacksonville proper.– [15]:148 In 1881 furniture manufacturer Andrew Jovanovich moved his business from Chicago Heights to open his own store there followed by others such as ice cream maker Harry Carpintero who also opened a grocery store there soon afterwards followed by lumber merchant Wessel Peterson whose store became known as The Farmer’s Store before finally dry goods dealer Julius Rosenwald bought it all Buried alive under building plans submitted for zoning change which changed hands several times before finally achieving approval in 1928 Heavily promoted By Drury Lane Theatre Manager Irving Berlin WhoSaid: I Heard That Mr Rosenwald Bought His Own Building And Built It Up To Be An opera House …..Its Really Interesting To Look At These Plans Now Afterall These Years In 1925 Ernst Joesten purchased land adjoining University Avenue south from downtown which he developed into what is today known as Spring Park Village Eminent Domain Sale Order No . 95 dated October 151920 gives rise to controversy over city planning jurisdiction Over Lots Nos . 103 & 104 From which lots No . 106 & 107 were acquired Following suit sale order no 114 dated September 16 1922 lands adjacent thereto were sold renamed University Drive Eminent Domain Sale Order No . 97dated April 14 1923 resulting In ingress Of forces authorized By Municipal government For Streets And Buildings Thereon Bonds Issued Against Property Value Of $120,- 000 Although platting Of streets did Not Begin Until 1935 When New Electric streetlighting Was Installed…………….Street Names Still Outstanding Today Because Of This History

After the Revolutionary War, trigger mechanisms continued to be used in firearms until about 1870 when they became largely replaced by mechanical Safeties (see below). Mechanical safeties or firelocks were first developed in response to concerns about accidental shootings with poorly-maintained guns.
