St. Cloud is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now St. Cloud were Native American Seminoles who called it "Tocobaga". A white man by the name of Alexander Mackenzie explored and mapped this area in 1819 while exploring the Gulf Coast of Mexico for British fur traders. In 1824, French explorer Jacques Cartier named the river Saint Croix after his patron saint, Croix de Beaumont (French: " Cross of Beaumont"), a crossroads on France's southern border with Canada which he reached on July 15, 1824. When Spain bought Florida from France in 1821 and renamed it Santa Clara County, it included much of what are now St. Cloud and Marion counties; however, only St. Cloud County was acquired from Spain as part of that deal. In 1835, Jno.[George] MacDonough established a small town about northwest of present day Stcloud on bluffs overlooking Lake Superior called Northfield,. He named it after his father-in-law Colonel John Malcolm who had come to America from Scotland three years earlier as one of Andrew Jackson's military advisors during the Mexican–American War with General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna as commander (Lopez de Santa Anna surrendered at San Luis Potosi on October 20th). Northfield quickly grew into a thriving community with sawmills and grist mills until around 1880 when an epidemic caused most businesses to close up shop due to lack of insurance payouts for workers killed or injured during their work hours; however local farmers managed to continue farming using their own hands until shortly before World War II when tractors took over agriculture and large tracts were plowed under for development purposes such as shopping malls and golf courses etc., ruining many historic sites along the way including Northfield Church which still stands today! In 1963, then Mayor Julius Erving awarded Stcloud Cityhood status making it one of only 10 cities in Southwest Florida granted cityhood within its first year following approval by voters at an election held November 2nd that year ballot measure . That same year also saw construction begin on what would become known as Central Park which includes portions of what is currently downtown Stcloud just south thereof off State Road 494 N/A
