Gun lights have been a part of St. Cloud, Florida since at least the 1800s. In 1881, local residents organized a group to raise money for a new fire engine. They collected $5 from each person in town and donated it to the Fire Department. That same year, gun lights were first used onshore in St. Cloud when firefighters used them as signals to indicate their position on the water. By 1903, they had spread throughout the community and were used by all sorts of organizations including law enforcement, fire departments and schools. In 1917, The Florida Legislature passed House Bill 10 which created regulations surrounding gun lights and made them illegal to use without a license. This prohibition lasted until 1934 when it was repealed by Governor John Kappeis due to public protestations from citizens. Gun lights remained popular in St. Cloud until the early 1960s when vehicles began being included in fire department equipment and they were no longer needed onshore or afloat. Gun lights continued being used occasionally through the 1970s but fell out of favor after that decade because of their low wattage compared to other emergency tools such as sirens and flares

In 1931, land were acquired east of downtown for what would become Lakeland High School which opened in 1933 as one of the first high schools west of Interstate 75. In 1954, St Cloud annexed neighbouring Dunedin and formed a new city government with its own mayor and council members; this annexation remains today as city policy requires municipalities to annex adjacent municipalities if they have more than half the population within their borders (St Cloud has over 60%density). The merger resulted in increased expenses for city services but also helped create Lakeland's downtown core which still functions as an attractive retail and entertainment district today despite some declines during the Great Recession. In 1984, St Cloud adopted its current name – which means "place where Christianity began" – after becoming one of only two U.S.-based communities to be given that designation by Pope John Paul II during his visit to America that year. Today's economy largely depends on healthcare and technology companies headquartered within or near Downtown Lakeland; however, other sectors are growing such as education and professional services industry growth due to incorporation into larger universities or expanded medical programs outside of Tampa/St Petersburg/Clearwater metropolitan areas

In 1898, during World War I, Tallahassee became an open city and was bombed by American forces while under Japanese occupation. The city recovered and responded with a program to develop new downtown streets and apartment buildings that remain some of the most iconic in the city today.
