When World War II began two months later St. Cloud was one of many American cities destroyed by bombing raids over Japan; however unlike other American cities such as New York City or Los Angeles where whole neighborhoods were flattened including any cultural heritage left behind (e.g., Nagasaki's 15-meter high statues of Buddhist gods), most buildings within downtown Stcloud survive today with only minor damage caused by air raids such as those conducted against Hiroshima and Nagasaki which resulted in almost 60% loss of life amongst buildings there alone – something unheard of prior to 1945 for either country! In 1859, St. Cloud was a small town in the northeast corner of Florida. It was named after Saint Cloud, a bishop in Sweden who died in 1742. When a post office was established at St. Cloud in 1861, it was called Donaldsonville. In 1872, the name of the town was changed to St. Cloud by act of the Florida Legislature and it became an incorporated city on January 1, 1903.
