The history of St Cloud can be traced back to 1851 when it was founded as a station on the Great Northern Railway by Alexander Rice. In 1904, it became a town when it was merged with neighboring communities of Duluth and Westville. In 1907, it became a city when it joined its neighbor Mankato into one municipality. On February 14, 1912, St Cloud annexed the adjacent community ofBrooklyn Park which had been formed from parts of White Earth and East Mankato townships. The annexation increased its population by over 15%. The name "St Cloud" first appeared on building permits in 1914 but this may have been an error as "St Andrews" had already been used for some years before that time for another retail store located in what is now Brooklyn Park

St. Cloud was founded by George Winthrop in 1821 as a Protestant mission town on the St. Clair River in what is now Minnesota. In 1828, the United States government decided to establish Fort Snelling in the area and moved the mission town to that site, renamed it St. Cloud, and began garrisoning it with American soldiers. The town became an important fur-trading post for the Indian tribes living around Superior Lake and also played an important role in U.S.-Canadian relations during the Northwest Territories era. In 1836, a group of Swedish immigrants led by Lars Johan Nordstrom arrived at St Cloud and began building a Lutheran church there. The first pastor of St Cloud was Andreas Nilsson, who served from 1840 to1846. The congregation grew rapidly and soon had its own school, cemetery, jail (later called Saint John's Hospital), sawmill, chapel, storehouse and other buildings. In 1847–48, Revs Anders Fritsch and Wilhelm Pohl built a new church on Depot Street east of Main Street (now US-1). The town's growth slowed after 1850 when most of the fur trade in Superior Lake died out due to competition from faster-growing rivals such as Montreal and Prairie du Chien in Wisconsin Rapids; however, it continued to grow slowly until its incorporation as a municipality on April 25th 1870 under local law No. 1 of that year. On December 12th 1906 – thanks largely to efforts by Mayor Harry Wessels – St Cloud became one of Florida's "gator counties." It officially celebrated its statehooddays on November 8th 1928; actually becoming a full county on October 15th 1934 following ratification of legislation creating it from parts of Hillsborough County ( collapsed into Duval County prior to 1959). After World War II ended hostilities against Japan throughout most of Southeast Asia including Singapore where much Japanese military activity took place during 1941–1945*, many Japanese refugees settled in or near St Cloud*. One such individual was Lieutenant Commander Akira Teraoka*, who spent several years working as bookkeeper for JCCF* warehouses before moving here permanently† (* See article “AJA History: USS Akagi Memorial Service” for more about this story.) Eventually over 1 million individuals residing within * contiguous * U S mainland areas were naturalized citizens†† (*See article “Naturalization Records 1907 through 1960: final analysis”.) Of these approximately 350 deceased individuals not included herein may have been naturalized citizens since their death certificate doesn’t list citizenship at that time! The region around St. Cloud, Florida was first populated by the Apalachicola people in the early 1800s. The area was part of the Seminole Nation until Indian removal began in 1855. By 1870, St. Cloud had a population of over 1,000 people and became an important railroad junction. In 1907, St. Cloud was renamed to honor Ulysses S. Grant, who served as president of the United States at the time. The city experienced significant growth during World War II due to its proximity to Tampa Bay and its ability to produce rubber products for military use. After the war, however, local businesses struggled and the city lost much of its economic importance. Today, St. Cloud is a small but growing community with a strong history and cultural heritage
