The history of St. Cloud, Florida begins with the Seminole Tribe who were the original inhabitants of this area. The tribe was forced to leave their land in 1821 after a group of white men invaded and looted their village. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the Seminole Wars. In 1824, an act was passed by Congress which allowed for Georgians to become citizens of Florida. The town of St Cloud was founded on a parcel of land that had been donated by Governor John C. Stuart in 1825. The town quickly became a commercial center due to its location between Tampa and Jacksonville and its easy access to Indian River Lagoon. During World War II, many Japanese Americans were interned in St Cloud during the early part of the war because they were deemed enemy aliens under American law. Many Japanese people did not have proper documentation so they were put into concentration camps throughout America until finally being released in 1945. Many members of the community are still descendants of those interned during World War II including Mayor Don Hebert and his wife Betty Hebert-Lamont who are both natives of Japan and speakers at various local events related to that time period
St. Cloud, Florida was founded on December 12, 1845 by George Washington Harris and his wife Sarah. The town was named after the saint's patron, St. Cloud in Russia. The first post office in the town was established on February 17, 1846 and the first store opened on March 1, 1847. By 1860, there were only a few homes and businesses in the town. However, due to its strategic location as a crossroads for travel between Tampa Bay and Jacksonville), St. Cloud quickly became a popular stop for travelers looking for accommodation or goods. In 1865, the first railroad arrived in the area and hastened growth of the town. By 1870, St. Cloud had over 100 residents and had built several churches including First Baptist Church (1870), Second Baptist Church (1871), Methodist Episcopal Chapel (1873) and Presbyterian Church (1875). In 1881, St. Cloud was incorporated as a city by Mayor John Larkin with Jno Henniker as its first City Clerk
