The first European to visit what is now St. Augustine was Guillermo de Anza on Christmas Day 1565. A temporary steel frame courthouse—the only one remaining from that era—was built at Seventh Street and Washington Avenue (now 41st Street) south of US 27 between 1949 and 1951; it served as the county seat during those years until a new courthouse was erected east of US 27 near State Road 706 between 1955 and 1957. In 1968–1969 Hurricane Andrew caused extensive damage to downtown including loss of roofs from high winds; total estimated damage was over $30 million ($1 billion present value). That year also saw the opening of San Augustin High School which replaced aging facilities within the old Courthouse complex at Ninth Street and Washington Avenue (now 41st Street). In 1990–1991 Hurricane Mitch destroyed much property within blocks east/west of downtown including loss or replacement of entire storefronts; total estimated damage reached $25 million ($8 billion present value). A new jail facility opened southeast side MLK Boulevard just north off I-95 Southbound exits ramp (#5) on October 3rd 1997 adjacent to PGA Course #1 (and still used today), replacing an ageing jail building that had been completed in 1914 but not occupied due to decay interior & exterior fabric & problems with inmate escapees since its completion approximately 10 years earlier!
