During World War II, St. Augustine played an important role in supplying military forces stationed in North Africa and Europe with foodstuffs and ammunition needed for Operation Overlord;[3] also during that time, many strategically located military installations were established within or near town limits including Eglin Air Force Base (later Jacksonville International Airport) and Camp Lejeune Naval Air Station.[4][5] Today much of what made St.Augustine such a popular tourist destination has been lost behind developer-dominated redevelopment: primarily commercial strip malls dotting otherwise empty streetscapes; high rates for parking; scant public access to natural beauty; few jobs or cultural attractions outside tourism.[6][7][8]
